The Blagoevgrad district is situated in the southwestern part of Bulgaria. It is the third largest district in the country after those of Burgas and Sofia.
The lovely scenery - high mountains and fertile valleys - gives a distinctive character and “colour” to the area. The district has 230 life-giving mineral springs, many with resort centres around them. Nearby is the area of the famous Melnik wine. When snow falls, Bansko becomes skiers’ paradise.
Blagoevgrad is the major town in the district and one of the most important economic and cultural centre in southwestern Bulgaria.
The drive from the north of Blagoevgrad to the Rila Monastery takes 40 minutes .
The living original folklore and well-preserved tradition provide rich cultural heritage expressed in a wide variety of crafts and folklore attractions.
Made in Pirin initiative, launched by the municipalities of the district, together with the numerous well-developed museums, assist the visitor in discovering a whole range of interesting crafts products, samples of which may also be acquired.
