The district with administrative centre the town of Pernik is situated in the south-western part of the country, 30 km south-west of the nation’s capital. Main roads of European and Balkan importance run across the territory of the region: road I - 1(E - 79) - Vidin - Sofia - Kulata and road E - 871 - Gjueshevo - Sofia - Bourgas. The district is located in an area with a temperate- continental climate with the exception of the Vitosha mountain. There is a variety of opportunities for steady development of the district due to the following circumstances: strategic location, proximity to the west borders of the country, well-preserved environment in some of the municipalities, appropriate open areas with built infrastructure, highly qualified workers and production tradition; unique historical landmarks. Pernik district is characterised by urbanization process, yet not well-developed agriculture, industrialized economy and a high rate of unemployment.
