Sofia district is situated in the central part of Western Bulgaria and it suburbs the territory of the capital almost as a ring. It is the second district with the biggest territory in Bulgaria /after Burgas district/ and has the biggest number of municipalities-22. The municipalities in Sofia district are: Anton, Bojurishte, Botevgrad, Godech, Gorna Malina, Dolna Bania, Dragoman, Elin Pelin, Etropole, Zlatitsa, Ihtiman, Koprivshtitsa, Kostenets, Kostinbrod, Mirkovo, Pirdop, Pravets, Samokov, Svoge, Slivnitsa, Chavdar and Chelopech. The district has no administration center and that is why Sofia turned to be a political, service and cultural center of Sofia district. The district is characterized with a good level of industrialization. There are various and important natural resources giving good opportunities for the development of the charcoal industry, the metallurgy and energy. The mountainous character of the relief gives good raw material for the wood and paper industry. The fully adequate utilization of the resources requires some further development of the transport and engineering infrastructure and their protection from any economic damage. The suitable geographical position, various natural resources, bright and industrious population, economic and infrastructure potential, which Sofia district has at its disposal, transform it into one of the main district in Bulgaria. By forming infrastructure corridors on the regional territory, which are an extension of European ones, by opening new checkpoints-there’s just one aim to pursue - increase of district’s role as a cross-road between Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern Europe.
